App Review: 10 Minute Plank Calisthenics

‘10 Minute Plank Calisthenics‘ is an app on the Google Play market. It’s free and, although the graphics leave a bit to be desired, it does what it says on the tin – offers a simple calisthenics plank workout in 10 minutes. There are a few similar apps on the Android market but we thought this one does a fine job – plus did I mention it’s free?
Each plank position is illustrated and the countdown timer clearly shows how long you have until you change position upon which it gives a customisable beep noise.
Unfortunately it only runs through 5 types of plank positions before returning back to finish the 7th and 8th set on the first two kinds however these positions all cover the main planking muscle groups (core section, abs, lower-body stabilizers and upper-body stabilizers including pecs).
1st: Basic Plank – Arms fully extended in push up position
2nd: Elbow Plank – Arms bent with weight resting on elbows
3rd: Left leg raised plank – In elbow plank position, raise your left leg into the air
4th: Right leg raised plank – Again, in elbow plank position, raise your right leg into the air
5th: Left side plank – With you left elbow against the ground, bring your right arm off the ground above your head.
6th: Right ride plank – With you right elbow against the ground, bring your left arm off the ground above your head.
7th: Back to the basic plank.
8th: Back to the elbow plank.
With the app on it’s default settings (around 1-2 minutes per position) the workout takes just over 10 minutes. Plus you can adjust the time in the settings page but if 10 mins is just too long there is also a ‘5 Minute Plank‘ app available from the same developer. Also you can set a reminder so the app can remind you to get busy!
Overall the app is great for taking the thought or hassle out of planning an effective plank workout AND for 10 minutes a day the plank workout is sure to bring results to beginners and is a great warmup for the more advanced calisthenics enthusiasts.
